Excellence in Aboriginal Programming

This award recognizes an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to reducing the impact and negative effects of alcohol and other drug use, or concurrent disorders involving substance use and mental health issues, in Aboriginal communities or among Aboriginal Peoples through the development or implementation of effective and innovative community programming.
The judging criteria include:
- Evidence that the program is based in good practice, is appropriately targeted and is sustainable.
- Evidence that the program is effective and innovative (extends current practice in order to address gaps or meet demonstrated challenges) in promoting mental, physical and/or social wellbeing.
- Evidence that the program was developed with the participation of the audience of interest and other key stakeholders and that the relevant cultural contexts of the participating Aboriginal community is taken into account.
- Evidence that the individual or group provided significant leadership in developing or implementing the program.
Excellence in Community Programming

This award recognizes an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to reducing the impact and negative effects of alcohol and other drug use, or concurrent disorders involving substance use and mental health issues, through the development or implementation of effective and innovative community programming. This award is not limited to alcohol and other drug specific interventions; it includes broad based physical and mental health promotion, prevention, and treatment programs aimed at addressing risk and protective factors; building resilience; or assisting in management or recovery which can be demonstrated to reduce the impact and negative consequences of alcohol and other drug use, or concurrent disorders involving substance use and mental health issues.
The judging criteria include:
- Evidence that the program is based in good practice, is appropriately targeted and is sustainable.
- Evidence that the program is effective and innovative (extends current practice in order to address gaps or meet demonstrated challenges) in promoting mental, physical and/or social wellbeing.
- Evidence that the program was developed with the participation of the audience of interest and other key stakeholders.
- Evidence that the individual or group provided significant leadership in developing or implementing the program.
Excellence in Leadership

This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated significant leadership within their community or sector (physical health, mental health, education, enforcement, social services, private sector, labour, etc.) to address the impact and negative effects of alcohol and other drug use, or concurrent disorders involving substance use and mental health issues. Leadership in building collaboration between sectors will be given special recognition.
The judging criteria include:
- Demonstrated recognition within the community or sector of the individual’s contribution.
- Evidence that the contribution of the individual advances good practice in the substance use field.
- Evidence that the contribution of the individual has encouraged cooperation and integration between programs, approaches, systems or sectors.
Excellence in Media Reporting

This award recognizes an individual who has, through media reporting or commentary, made a major contribution to the public understanding of substance use, or concurrent disorders involving substance use and mental health issues, the related harms, and the range of appropriate responses. The individual’s contributions are characterized by thoughtfulness and sensitivity in commenting on current issues related to substance use and related public policies and services. They draw on the best available evidence to create context and to promote understanding.
The judging criteria include:
- Evidence of the significance of the individual’s contribution in addressing substance use and related mental, physical and social health issues.
- Evidence of the individual’s awareness of the complexities involved and of the available evidence.
- Degree to which the contributions promote a clearer understanding of substance use issues within the community.
Excellence in Mental Health and Substance Use Programming

This award recognizes an individual or program that has made a significant contribution to addressing the complex intersection of substance use and mental health issues through the development or implementation of programming that promotes mental wellness and/or healthy choices related to substance use.
The judging criteria include:
- Evidence that the program is effective in promoting mental wellness, addressing mental illness, and/or reducing high risk substance use.
- Evidence that the program was developed with the participation of the audience of interest and other key stakeholders.
- Evidence that the program is well connected to alcohol and other drug services and/or mental health services in the community/region in which it operates.
- Evidence that the individual or group provided significant leadership in developing or implementing the program.
Excellence in Public Policy

This award recognizes an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to reducing the impact and negative effects of alcohol and other drug use, or concurrent disorders involving substance use and mental health issues, through the advancement of effective public policy which was applied at any level (national, provincial, territorial, municipal or First Nations).
The judging criteria include:
- Evidence that the individual or group has had an impact on public policy within stated jurisdiction(s).
- Evidence that the policy has been effective in promoting mental, physical and/or social wellbeing.
- Evidence that the policy recognises broad social values and respects diversity and human rights.
Excellence in Youth Leadership

This award recognizes a young person (25 years or younger) as having demonstrated significant initiative and leadership within their school or community to address the impact and negative effects of alcohol and other drug use, or concurrent disorders involving substance use and mental health issues.
The judging criteria include:
- Demonstrated recognition within the community or setting of the individual’s contribution.
- Demonstrated recognition of the individual’s positive role model and impact on peers.
- Evidence that the contribution of the individual encourages cooperation and integration.
A completed Nomination Package must consist of:
The nomination package should consist of the following:
- The completed nomination form (max 5 pages) – This could be an electronic form with expandable sections for an introductory summary and each of the category’s criteria. This form must provide the case for the nomination. Electronic form submission will be encouraged.
- Letters of support from a minimum of three (3) independent references – These letters should provide evidence of the impact of the individual’s or group’s contribution.
- Nominators may provide links to relevant websites if they wish. Other attachments (maximum 10 pages) may be submitted but must be electronically transmittable. Nominators will be informed that attachments do not take the place of the nomination form and may not be considered by the judging panel.
